Case Study

A Salamanca client wanted to invest $80m into an Eastern European property fund that claimed to own land for development in the centre of a Balkan state capital. Salamanca was tasked to carry out a discreet due diligence on the fund and its principle owners. The ensuing investigation uncovered significant exaggeration of the fund's 'track record' as well as falsification of involvement in certain deals in the Far East. Background checks on the owners also discovered that one had a brother-in-law who was senior within the state secret police and was linked to various illicit businesses. Although this appeared to enable the fund to bypass certain complicated bureaucratic procedures, in Salamanca's view it also represented a significant risk to both the client's corporate reputation and investment.
